If you’re travelling with a group, be it friends or family, or with a school group or team group travel insurance is a better alternative to putting everyone on single policies. Not only it cheaper, but you get insurance specifically tailored for the needs of your group.

If you’re simply away on a group holiday with friends you can get the basic cover that any traveller would get, just for more people and probably working out at a lot cheaper per person than single person insurance. You get all the contents cover, protection against flight cancellation and can add in the cover for if your travel company, flight or accommodation goes out of business.

If you’re going with a school group or sports team the cover is slightly different. Sports insurers offer special policies for those in large groups and different ones for school teams where some of the group members might be complete beginners or amateurs. The same applies to independent sports teams taking a group- be them adults or children. These will insure against injury and breakages like normal sports insurance but also have added contents insurance for the group. You’ll also have to nominate someone as official group leader who is in charge of all the proceedings. This will also mean they are considered responsible for the well being of the entire group, though this doesn’t mean the other people have to be any less safe in how they conduct themselves.

With a school group the leader will usually be one of the teachers, and because often schools take away large groups there are plenty of different insurance policies that cover the teachers or assistants as being official guardians of the children and in charge of their well being and safety. If you’re a teacher planning a trip away the school board will definitely help with the insurance arrangements and help can be given with costs. It’s also a safe bet to put everyone on a group passport rather than risking 60 school children all carrying their own and running the risk of losing one- if one person looses their passport, the whole party has to stay behind until something can be arranged remember!
