If you have a pre-existing medical condition such as diabetes or a disability it can make you very reluctant to go on holiday. What if you lost your medication and couldn’t get more? What if your flight was cancelled and you ran out of meds? Or, what if you had a sudden attack and were rushed into a foreign hospital?

Lots of companies understand that you shouldn’t miss out on time away because of your medical condition, and lots offer excellent rates of insurance with companies like Virgin giving you unlimited cover for medical expenses if you choose their top level of cover. These companies cover any sort of injury including those caused by a pre-existing condition and those that occur on holiday with cover against loss of limb or sight, fractures, complete disablement and many more that you can think of.

Obviously those with a condition will certainly need to take out medical insurance for peace of mind and security, but even if you’re in the peak of health you can never really tell when something might take a turn for the worse. If you suddenly developed a condition and needed urgent help you might well be stuck without travel insurance- especially if you’re in a country without free health care like we have in Britain. Also, and not to stereotype, but if you have children on holiday with you, medical insurance can be a big bonus because you never know when one of you might have a fall by the pool or in the playground.

This can also extend to those who are planning to do sports on holiday and have a chance of being injured doing that, but a lot of sports insurance policies are designed to ensure against injury as well as damage or loss of equipment and some medical insurers will say that sports are undertaken at your own risk and therefore they cannot insure against them- so before you make a decision look in to sports insurance first if this is your overall goal.
