When you’re pregnant you just want to relax and prepare for the birth of your child, and sometimes a nice holiday away is a nice way to kick back- after all, in a few months time you won’t have time to relax or go on holiday because you’ll have a newborn who needs constant care and attention. So, being pregnant shouldn’t stop you going away to enjoy yourself.
Most companies will insure pregnant women as part of their basic insurance, but it always is useful to check this out before hand to see exactly what is covered as you might end up needing to get some extra. Medical insurance would help on this due to the fragile nature of your body whilst pregnant and the risk of complications early on which could be catastrophic if left unseen to. Pregnancy insurance whilst travelling, however, is a very safe way to go and is worth looking in to. Many will even offer repatriation as part of the cover if you need to be sent home.
The safest time to travel is during your 2nd trimester as the 1st is the time when the most things can go wrong, and the 3rd carries the risk of early birth. Generally, they will insure you up to the 28th week of pregnancy, and after that they will be reluctant to due to the possibility of an early birth- and no one wants that to happen on a beach or on a plane. Some companies will insure later, but a lot recommend you don’t travel within 8 weeks of your due date, and your doctor will back this up. However, if the airline you are travelling with will not allow you to travel past a certain stage in the pregnancy the insurers will not insure you.
In this case cheap does not necessarily mean comprehensive and quality, so to prevent any sort of risk to you and your baby make sure you research in detail and if you’re unsure about anything ask your doctor or insurance provider for more help. If you really can’t find a way of being insured the best option is to just not go- you might not get the holiday abroad you wanted, but you’ll know you and your child are safe. However if you need to travel during this time, you could search for a tailor made insurance policy for you- this will be more expensive than typical ‘off the shelf’ cover, but will certainly be the protection you need.
