What is a travel insurance policy?

A travel insurance policy is a way of looking after yourself when you are on holiday or travelling abroad. A travel insurance policy will protect a customer financially from any costs arising as a result of falling ill or getting injured and needing medical care, from delayed or cancelled flights, lost, stolen or damaged luggage and belongings and from accommodation that is either cancelled or closed down at the last minute or while you are on your trip.

A travel insurance policy looks after a customer in many ways, and is one of the few things you should never leave the UK without, simply because of the sheer costs that someone can incur when away from the UK, even a vast number which will be through no fault of their own.

Why do I need a travel insurance policy?

The potential costs that can arise when you go on holiday without a travel insurance policy are huge, and none more so than in the medical costs field. In the UK we are blessed with the NHS, a world class free health service we pay for with taxes and often take for granted. It is always there however, and UK citizens do not have to pay for their health care in the UK as a result.

When you travel abroad things are different and many countries do not have their own NHS, having private medical care instead, especially for those who are not from their country and don’t pay taxes.

The costs that you can incur are staggering, and a week spent in intensive care, plus an operation can cost in excess of £100,000 in some places. You never know when you might fall ill or get injured, and most people could simply not afford to pay the staggering costs associated with getting ill abroad. With a travel insurance policy you will not need too.

Cancelled flights or flight delays can cause you to lose time abroad on your trip or holiday, or lose time when you get back home, and some people may need to take extra unpaid leave from work if they fail to get home in time from their trip.

These particular people can use their travel insurance policy to claim compensation for loss of time or money, making a travel insurance policy an investment many people can’t afford to be without.
